A Message From Katy:

Swallowing disorders are as diverse as the patients they affect. There is rarely a cut-and-dry formula for successful recovery. Many common practices are ineffective, as they address only specific symptoms or specific phases of the swallow. Due to the complex physiology and delicate nature of the swallowing mechanism, true recovery can ONLY be affected by diagnosing the underlying cause(s) of dysphagia and treating the whole patient. It is my passionate belief that dysphagia management must include all phases of swallowing, including and especially the esophageal phase. The nutritional choices patients make are vital to recovery and swallowing safety.

What Is A FEES Procedure?

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing is an innovative and effective tool for diagnosing and managing swallowing problems. FEES is well-tolerated by most patients and is an excellent alternative or addition to a clinical swallowing evaluation and/or Modified Barium Swallow study. A transnasal laryngescope is passed into the patient’s pharynx, and the swallow is evaluated as needed. Because there is no radiation exposure, the therapist has incredible flexibility to tax the patient, attempt multiple management strategies, and evaluate effects of multiple factors on swallowing safety/efficiency.

Swallow Center will provide equipment, personnel, generate timely reports, and provide thorough patient/staff/family education and clear recommendations. Our FEES equipment is portable, allowing Swallow Center to work with facilities and home health agencies to serve even the most critical or homebound patients. All-in-all, FEES is a simple, effective way to objectively determine swallowing safety and appropriate intervention.
